About us

British Parachute Association (BPA), founded in 1961, is the not-for-profit National Governing Body of Sport Parachuting in the UK. Sport parachuting, also known as skydiving, is one of the most exciting and exhilarating sports in the world.

This is a time of massive change at the British Parachute Association. We have totally modernised our governance structure, invested in a major refurbishment of our offices, all to make us an organisation fit for the future. To help us continue with these changes we are looking to appoint, for the first time two Independent NEDs. We’re developing our vision, mission, values and identity to reach our target demographics. We’re looking for strategic input to grow and develop our membership and realise the untapped potential of our fantastic sport.

We have over 6,000 full members, and nearly 60,000 student members each year. We also have around 30 BPA Affiliated Parachute Training Organisations (BPA Affiliated PTOs), mostly throughout the UK, who affiliate to us to set and maintain standards of safety and training. We employ a staff of 8.5 full-time equivalents, including two World Class technical specialists, at our Leicester headquarters.

Our Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales. We are a member of the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom and represent the UK on the International Parachuting Commission of Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the World Air Sports Federation.

As part of our good governance initiative, we are appointing two Independent Non-Executive Directors (INED) to our Council (our Board of Directors) for the first time. The size of our Council is reducing from 15 to 12, in line with best practice. The 12-strong Council will comprise ten Elected Non-Executive Directors from, and elected by, the membership, together with 2 Independent Non-Executive Directors.

Under our transitional arrangements to a three-year period of tenure on Council, one of the INED appointments shall be for a period of one year, and the other shall be for a period of two years.

Thereafter, the individuals shall be eligible for consideration for re-appointment for a three-year term.
