Display Teams

Most parachuting takes place on BPA-Affiliated Parachute Centres on airfields known as Drop Zones. BPA-Registered Display Teams can offer parachute displays at any appropriate location where it is safe to do so. Display parachuting describes the part of the sport which puts the drop zone amongst the public and allows many people to witness the skill and commitment display parachutists have in their sport.
Many Display Teams are formed through large organisations such as the Military (the Royal Navy/Royal Marines, the various Army regiments and the Royal Air Force) as well as other organisations such as the Police Service. Other teams are made up from a number of like-minded civilian enthusiasts - many parachute Clubs & Centres support a display team or have a team training there permanently or from time to time. Either way, the result is a group of skydivers who enjoy the thrill and challenge of landing as part of a team, usually on a small dropzone, avoiding the many hazards nearby, in front of a crowd of sometimes up to thousands of members of the public. Displays vary in their content. Most teams demonstrate a combination of impressive freefall and canopy skills using smoke for added visual effect and perhaps large trailing flags which are deployed under canopy. The teams then land in an arena surrounded by a crowd of exited members of the public. Some military teams even use military aircraft and helicopters to continue the military theme of the display. Parachute displays often form a spectacular highlight to a special event such as a town or village show or fete, or a sporting or cultural event.
